SVARAJ- Society for Voluntary Action Revitalization and Justice, is a national Voluntary organization working for the last 35 years on environmental protection & regeneration and fighting poverty & injustices. Our vision is “A just society in a just environment”.
We believe in equipping the poor to claim their rights & lead their own development; and seek to do this by linking innovative community initiatives to state & national advocacy. Svaraj implements community programs directly while also supporting grass root NGOs through small grants.
Our current focus:
Thematic: 1) Water & Sanitation- including rooftop rainwater harvesting, rejuvenation of water bodies/rivers; 2) Livelihood security; 3) Climate change coping & adpatation; 4) Empowering women/communities to lead their development;
Geographic: States of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan & Gujarat
Social/people groups: Women, small/marginal farmers, landless families, tribal communities, slum communities
Our development strategy entails:
Demonstrating & nurturing best practices in community anchored development initiatives in water, food and livelihood security
Sensitization of: communities through hands on in situ trainings & campaigns; students, youth & working professionals through providing volunteering/internship opportunities
Influencing appropriate policies-practices (& changes) of the larger stakeholder community – Govt & GOs, through:
Evidence based Advocacy
Lobbying through synergetic collaborations with academic/research institutions
Strategic use of communication tools and media
Raising resources for financing these initiatives through Appeals & with public-private collaborations
We derive fulfilment from the several success stories of poor transforming their lives to lead a life of dignity, influencing transformation in their village/small town economies.
The difficulties we encounter and the failures we go through make us wiser by the day.
